    A look at state champions around the country.

    With the NCAA championships wrapping up and the WNBA draft occurring, it's easy to forget all the great state high school championships that went on this past month. From Colorado's Highlands Ranch High to Arkansas' Guy-Perkins High, we've got a lot of champions to tell you about.

    Colorado
    The Highlands Ranch girls' basketball team finished where it began the season: as the champion. It was the second year in a row that the Falcons reigned over the Class 5A championship. Led by All-Americans Katy Flecky and Ann Strother, Highlands Ranch defeated Doherty 53-44 for its second straight championship crown. Flecky, headed for NCAA champion Notre Dame, scored 23 points and pulled down seven rebounds, while Strother pumped in 15 points and grabbed eight boards. Highlands Ranch became only the second school to win consecutive titles in the five-year history of the 64-team, big school bracket.

    Kentucky
    Sophomore Sarah Schell converted a last-second putback to give Lexington Catholic a 36-34 triumph over Manual in the state finals. Schell stole the ball with 35 seconds remaining to set up her winning shot. She shot the potential game-winner and missed, but grabbed the rebound and converted the basket at the buzzer. A patient Catholic quintet fought back from a 24-15 deficit at the intermission and took its first lead at 27-26 on a 3-pt. field goal by Chelsea Chowning with 58 seconds left in the third quarter. Manual tied the game with one minute to go, but could not regain the lead. Chowning led Lexington Catholic (32-4) with 16 points, while Liz Plass topped Manual with 18.

    Maryland
    In the 4A championships, two undefeated teams, Suitland and Churchill, met in the finals. Only one could remain unbeaten. Suitland (22-0) held on to a 15-point second-half lead to grab the victory (61-57), its third state title in four years. Freshman Lakea Jones scored 17 points for the winners.

    In the 2A championships, Dunbar (23-5) won its second consecutive 2-A title with a 63-36 walloping of Urbana.

    New York
    A Federation record 43 points by Michelle Blot helped Colonie win the Class A title with a 72-55 triumph over Bergtraum. Blot also set a record with five 3-pt. field goals, hitting on half of her shots from behind the arc. Her 25 points at halftime gave Colonie a 40-18 margin at the intermission. Teammate Kim Corbitt had 10 points, seven rebounds and seven assists, while Crystal McFadden topped Bergtraum with 17 points.

    North Carolina
    Sisters Kari and Kelley Karns combined for 37 points and 21 rebounds to lead East Surry (28-3) over previously unbeaten Perquimans 69-65 for the 1-A championship. Perquimans entered the game at 30-0, but the Karns sisters out-dueled the Lady Pirates' center Kindra Lee, who had 34 points and 14 boards. Kelley (22 points, 14 rebounds) and Kari (15 points, eight caroms) are headed to Tusculum College in Greeneville, Tenn., to play the hardcourt game and softball.

    In 3-A action, Winston-Salem Carver, a team that was 1-23 three years ago, completed an unbeaten 30-0 season with a 64-53 win over T.C. Roberson. It is the first NCHSAA title to be won by Carver in a girls sport. Carver turned 24 Lady Rams turnovers into 33 points.

    Ohio
    Jackson Center kept fighting off a determined Holgate to win the Division IV state championship, 53-47. Keesha Smith scored 20 points and Christen Halberstadt added 17 and pulled down 12 rebounds for the Tigers who finished the year 27-1. Jackson Center opened its largest lead of the first half (26-18), but Holgate's Jenny Fruth swished a 35-foot shot at the buzzer for a 26-21 halftime margin for the Tigers. Holgate (24-3) opened the third quarter with five straight points by Fruth to knot the game, but Smith's six straight points near the end of the period gave Jackson Center a 37-36 lead it never relinquished.

    Tennessee
    Shelbyville (34-2) won its second consecutive Class 3A championship, its 10th overall, with a 57-50 victory over Murfreesboro Riverdale. Abi Ramsey, who will join an excellent Vanderbilt University team next year, pumped in 35 points, including 5-of-7 from 3-pt. land. Another future Vanderbilt player, Ashley Early, scored 21 points to lead Briarcrest (35-1) to a 78-48 triumph over Chattanooga Baylor for the Division II championship. Early, chosen Division II Miss Basketball, also had eight assists, six steals and four rebounds to earn tournament MVP honors.

    Wisconsin
    Center Mistie Bass scored 13 and guard Emily Gunn added 11 to give Janesville Parker (26-1) a 51-44 victory over Stevens Point for the Division 1 state championship. The winners shot 42.5 percent from the field to just 36 for the losers, and converted 13-of-17 from the foul line to 5-for-8 for Stevens Point. Janesville Parker held a 20-15 margin at halftime, but Stevens Point rallied to trail by only one (32-31) going into the final period. The winners increased the margin in the fourth quarter, outscoring their opponents, 19-13.
