Has Vanderbilt ever won a national championship?
No, the closest the Commodores came was in 1993, when they made their only trip to the Final Four. But Vandy Head Coach Jim Foster has watched a former player and two former assistant coaches take home the trophy over the last three years:
2001 champion Notre Dame's head coach, Muffet McGraw, was an assistant to Foster when he was Head Coach at St. Joseph's University.
2000 champion Connecticut's head coach, Geno Auriemma, was also an assistant of Foster's at St. Joe's.
1999 champion Purdue's head coach Carolyn Peck played for Foster at Vanderbilt from 1986-1990. (Peck is now Head Coach of the WNBA Orlando Miracle.)
Vanderbilt is currently ranked No. 5 in the Gballmag.com poll with a 16-3 record. Many analysts say this year's Vanderbilt team has a great chance to make it to the Final Four, if not win a national title.
