Who leads Division I in scoring?
Jackie Stiles, Southwest Missouri State
Jackie Stiles, a senior 5'8" guard for Southwest Missouri State, is currently the top scorer in NCAA Division I basketball. As of Jan. 3, she held a 30.2 average, helping SMS to a 7-3 record.
Stiles was the national leader in scoring at the end of last season, also, finishing with a 27.8 average. If she continues at her current pace, she has a chance to break the NCAA all-time Division I scoring record of 3,122 points held by Patricia Hoskins of Mississippi Valley State.
But Stiles is more focused on winning than her personal scoring average. Her goal this year is for the Bears to win the Missouri Valley Conference and advance past the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Stiles played high school ball for Claflin High in Kansas, and holds the state's scoring record (for both boys and girls) with 3,603 points. Last year, she was named the Topeka Capital-Journal's girls' Player of the Century. She also participated in volleyball, track and field, cross-country and tennis at Claflin.
This question just in:
How many total points has Jackie Stiles scored toward the NCAA record for all time high scorer? How many more does she need to break the record and how many games will she have to do it in?
Thank you.
D. Steiner
Here's the scoop:Jackie Stiles has scored 2,689 points (as of Jan. 6). She needs to score 434 more points to break the record. There are 15 more regular season games left on the SMS schedule, after which comes the Missouri Valley Conference tournament and possibly some NCAA tourney games (if SMS gets a bid). She is now averaging just under 30 points (29.83) per game over the first 12 contests of the season. So, she'll need to continue at close to that pace to break the record (434 divided by 15 = 28.93).
