  • Introducing:
    Erin Grant

Texas Tech has recruited a point guard who knows how to win--she's led her team to four straight state titles.

In the past four years, Mansfield (Texas) High School has won four 5A state championships. The thread connecting all those titles is Erin Grant, the outstanding point guard for each of those title-winning teams.

Grant's greatness was confirmed by an anonymous reader from Mansfield, who nominated her to Gballmag.com. "Erin is a great leader on and off the court and I think she deserves to a High School Hero" she wrote. "Erin meets all the qualifications to be a great hero and is someone young basketball girls look up to."

Over her four-year career as a starter at Mansfield, the 5'7" Grant led the team to a 144-6 cumulative record, including 28-0 in the playoffs. She averaged 12 points, eight assists and four rebounds a game this past season.

"She's a fierce competitor," Mansfield coach Samantha Morrow said of Grant. "And she's obviously a winner. She's somebody that when the game is on the line, you can count on her."

Named to USA Today's Preseason Top 25 Players list (among several other similar honors), Grant's latest recognition include being chosen Gatorade Texas High School Girls Basketball Player of the Year, and being selected to participate in the first-ever McDonalds All-American Girls High School Basketball Game, held at New York City's Madison Square Garden on April 4. She was also named this week to the 2002 Parade All-American team as a second-team selection.

This fall, Grant will be attending Texas Tech (she also considered Duke, Stanford and Georgia), "The main thing was staying close enough to home for my parents to watch me," Grant told the Dallas Morning News. "And the program itself is pretty awesome."

At Texas Tech, she'll play for Head Coach Marsha Sharp. "Erin is one of those players who will make an immediate impact at the Division I level," Sharp stated last November. "She will be an outstanding college point guard and will complement the guards in our program."

That seems to reemphasize what our anonymous Mansfield reader wrote of Grant: "She is going to be someone."
