Introducing:
Erin Myrick
From the West Coast to the Lone Star State
A late growth spurt has given Erin Myrick the game of a point guard to go with her post-player height. Only 5-9 two years ago, she has sprouted to 6-3, and now heads into her senior season at Bishop Amat Memorial High School in Duarte, Calif., with a well-rounded repertoire.
It's that package that has attracted recruiters from major colleges all around the country. After considering Kansas State, Colorado, New Mexico, Purdue, Iowa State, UCLA and Arizona, Myrick announced in July that she'll be attending Texas Tech University next year, though it won't be official until she signs her Letter of Intent in November.
"There were a lot of things that helped my decision, but mainly it was Coach (Marsha) Sharp," Myrick told The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. "I loved her and her staff right away. We had a good relationship from the very beginning."
She added, "I really wanted to move away from home and play somewhere in the Big 12, and Tech fits both those needs. I personally think the Big 12 is the best conference in the country, because there are just so many good schools. It'll be exciting to be a part of that competition."
Myrick's excitement extends to the type of game the Red Raiders play under Sharp. "I really like their style of play, because I love running up and down the floor," she said. "The coaches said that I shouldn't come in expecting to start, but they also told me that I could definitely earn some playing time if I worked hard and moved myself up."
Myrick still has one season left in her high school career, so she'll be looking to lead Bishop Amat to top last season's 28-6. Last year, she averaged 17 points and nine rebounds per game and was named all-division, all-state and the San Gabriel Valley Tribune's player of the year.
Bishop Amat Head Coach Richard Wiard plans to take advantage of Myrick's versatility. "She's a very physical player, and eventually, I think she might be able to play some on the outside," Wiard told The Lubbock Avalanche-Journal. "We run a lot of stuff on the high post, and she's hit some 3-pointers for us, as well. She's very hard to guard, because she can take you inside and she can take you outside."
Myrick was invited to the USA Basketball Youth Development Festival in Colorado this summer, and she also attended the Nike Camp. Reporters from the OldGoldFreePress.com, who cover the camp extensively, wrote: "A large inside presence, Erin has extremely soft hands for a player of her size and made her guards look good by easily handling all but the most errant pass. She had no trouble finishing in traffic." Such skills show that Myrick is ready to move up to the next level.
