Introducing:
Tan White
This Mississippi shooting guard racked up more than 3,000 points during her career, but her biggest feat was finally landing a state title.
One of our Gballmag.com readers, Patricia Pratt, nominated Tan White of Tupelo (Miss.) High School for our High School Hero page, calling her "one of the best teammates I'll ever have."
"She is nationally known and was looked at by coaches from the best schools," Pratt says. "After two consecutive years ending the season second in the state of Mississippi, Tan finally led us to a state championship her senior year. She has broken a high school record by scoring well over 3,000 points during her career. She could have had 5,000 but her unselfish aura and her ability to get her teammates involved in the game kept her from that. Please recognize her."
A 5-9 guard, White led the Lady Waves to a 32-2 record and the Class 5A state title this spring. In the championship game versus Meridian, she scored 28 points, 11 in the fourth quarter. It was a fitting end to an excellent senior season, in which she averaged 24.4 points per game while pulling down 7.8 rebounds per game and averaging 2.7 blocks per contest. White also dished out 5.6 assists per game while shooting 71 percent from the free-throw line.
A three-time All-State pick, White had a quadruple-double against Calhoun City as a junior: 47 points, 14 steals, 10 rebounds, and 10 assists. She ended her high school career with 3,232 points and capped her senior year by being named 2001 Mississippi Gatorade Player of the Year.
Despite her gaudy stats, White said she would be like to remembered as a complete player, not as a gunner. "It isn't all about the shooting and scoring for me," she told The Mississippi Daily Journal. "I'd like to think that I'm more of an all-around player who played good defense."
White's team-oriented attitude was confirmed by Tupelo Head Coach Nanci Gray. "Tan is the most unselfish player of that caliber that you will ever see," said Gray. "She did not demand anything from her teammates that she was not willing to give."
Last month, White was selected as a Parade All-American and was also chosen to play in the Mississippi-Alabama All-Star Game, which is scheduled for June 9 in Florence, Ala., at the University of North Alabama.
In the fall, White will head to Mississippi State, where she'll play for the Lady Bulldogs. "Tan has the potential to be a great player in the SEC," said Head Coach Sharon Fanning . "She understands the game and has excellent court awareness. We are recruiting Tan as a two-guard. She has a tremendous knack for the game, which should make her an impact player as a freshman."
