    A volleyball interlude

    By Katie Peterson

Since August, I have been playing volleyball for my high school. Our season is not going too well, but I have had a lot of fun playing, and enjoyed seeing people that I wouldn't usually see. However, even though I have been playing volleyball, I have still been practicing basketball every day that I don't have a volleyball game. This is difficult, but it's the only way I can get better at basketball. I work on making 120 baskets every workout, and I also jump rope.

Last weekend, my AAU team had one final tournament in Philadelphia. On my way to Philly Friday afternoon, my family and I visited Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania, where I dropped in on the assistant coach. I was pretty nervous to be meeting a college coach for the first time, but once we started to talk about basketball, she put me at ease, and I really started to like her and the program. Then, we proceeded to the "Best of the Best" shootout at Villanova. There, girls were randomly put on teams based on their positions and we played two games Friday night, without our AAU team. Only myself and one other girl from my AAU team participated. I had a lot of fun meeting new people and getting to play in front of a ton of coaches! My team won both of the games, although the most important part was that we all played well as a team in front of scouts.

The next day, my actual AAU team played one last tournament in Philadelphia. For the seniors on the team (I am a junior), it was the last time they would ever play AAU. We also had some new girls come play, to see if they will play be us in the spring. We went 2-2, and had so much fun playing together for the last time. Although I won't be playing with some of these girls again, we will definitely keep in touch.

Volleyball ends in about two weeks, and then my school basketball team season begins again. I really enjoyed playing with the girls on the volleyball team, even though we didn't win a lot. I am very excited to play with my old varsity basketball team, and I am looking forward to seeing how well we play together with the newer girls. If we work hard in practices and push each other, we can have an even better record this season than we did last year. One of the things that I am working on is my strength and conditioning, and setting goals for myself in games. I am really looking forward to this year!
